One thing I learned on my sabbatical is that books make me better. I read a LOT (it’s my job!) but I can be kinda lazy in my reading. By that I mean that it’s really easy for me to fit in popular fiction, as I literally *have* to read it for work. But one of the things I did on sabbatical was to mow through the NYTimes best books of 2018 and I got SO MUCH from reading that list, which contained more literary fiction and lots of nonfiction. I also always LOVE reading self-help stuff, but I’m not always good about actually sitting down and doing that work.
So, my only real New Year’s resolution was to be more intentional in my reading, and to make sure I read the following every month (alongside my popular fiction):
One nonfiction book
One self-help and/or (writing) craft book
One literary novel
For February, I’ll be reading the following:
Nonfiction: Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s “We Should All Be Feminists.”
Self-Help/Creativity: Danielle LaPorte’s The Fire Starter Sessions
Literary: Jesmyn Ward’s Sing, Unburied, Sing
